Dr. Karel Van den Bosch

KAREL VAN DEN BOSCH obtained the degree of ‘Doctorandus’ (Master) in Sociology at the University of Nijmegen (NL) in 1985. In 1999 he acquired a PhD in the Political and Social Sciences at the Antwerp University. His thesis, entitled ‘Identifying the Poor, Using Subjective and Consensual measures’, was subsequently published by Avebury in 2001. It also gained him the two-yearly prize ‘P.W. Segers’ and the title of ‘Laureaat van de Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten’. Van den Bosch's research work at the Herman Deleeck Centre for Social Policy concerns empirical studies on poverty and income distribution in Belgium and in OECD countries generally. His research focuses on methods of poverty measurement; lately his interest has shifted from subjective methods to budget standards. Since October 2010, Van den Bosch works part-time at the Centre, his main job being at the Federal Belgian Planning Bureau.
